About Number Route

Number Route is an arithmetic puzzle with one target per route. You get four numbers in a fixed order and choose the three signs between them: plus, minus, times or divide. The catch is that the game calculates strictly from left to right, so each step uses your running total rather than ordinary order of operations.

Each puzzle has one solution, and division must give a whole number, so you need to think a few steps ahead. An Anytime round has ten routes worth up to 2,500 points, and fewer attempts earn more points. It runs in the browser with no download and no account needed, and a short guided practice route helps newcomers learn the left to right rule.

Number Route is a free browser arithmetic puzzle by BrainiLab. Keep four numbers in their given order and choose three operators to reach a target, calculating strictly from left to right. How to play Number Route

  1. Start a round, or try the optional practice route first to see how the left to right rule works.
  2. Look at the target and the four numbers, which always stay in their given order.
  3. Choose +, −, × or ÷ between each pair of numbers, using your running total at every step.
  4. Use all four numbers and land exactly on the target to solve the route, then move to the next one.
  5. Solve all ten routes with as few attempts as possible to score up to 2,500 points.

Tips for Number Route

  • Forget normal order of operations: work strictly left to right, so 7 − 3 × 6 means 4 × 6, not 7 − 18.
  • Work backward from the target: ask which last sign and last number could reach it, then figure out what running total you need before that.
  • Only use ÷ when the running total divides evenly, since division must give a whole number.
  • Think before each try, because fewer attempts earn more points, and remember you must use every number even if you hit the target early.
